A retired toolmaker in Detroit showed me why I was wasting time on offsets

He watched me sweat over a 0.0005 adjustment for 20 minutes, then said “your spindle is telling you the truth, just listen to the sound”, and after I backed off the cut and re-listened, the part came out perfect on the first try, so has anyone else ever had an old timer point out a simple fix that made you feel dumb?
