My apartment's heat bill dropped by $40 last month after I tried a simple window trick

Last week, I finally got around to sealing my drafty windows with that removable rope caulk you can get at any hardware store. I live in an old building in Chicago, and you could feel the cold air coming in. It took me about an hour to do all five windows in my place. I was shocked when I got my heating bill and it was so much lower. It made me realize how much energy I was wasting just from those small gaps. What other low cost fixes have you all done to cut down on energy use at home?

Wait, are drafty windows really that big of a deal? My place gets a little chilly but I just put on a sweater.

Oh man, the sweater strategy only gets you so far. My old apartment had windows that basically functioned as a free air conditioning unit all winter. My heating bill looked like a phone number from a different country. Ended up wearing so many layers indoors I started to resemble a sad, lumpy couch cushion. It's less about the chill and more about the wallet screaming in pain every month.
