I got in the routine of tapping the flue before sweeping and it led to a weird find
I stopped just going straight in with the brush every time. Now I give the chimney a few knocks first to listen for anything loose. Last Tuesday, I tapped and heard a jingling sound way up there. Turns out someone's kid lost a set of keys down the vent years ago. The look on the homeowner's face when I pulled them out was priceless.

Man, I used to think tapping was a waste of time. Your story about the keys totally changed my view. It makes sense now to check for loose stuff before jamming a brush up there. Finding those keys probably saved a lot of trouble later. I'm gonna start doing the tap from now on. Guess even old dogs can learn new tricks.

Still seems like extra work to me.

Yeah, @derek_gonzalez, I get how that keys story shifted your thinking. My friend tapped a chimney once and heard this weird rustling sound. It turned out to be a squirrel stash of acorns and leaves packed tight in a flue. He said clearing that out probably stopped a draft issue that would've been nasty to fix later.
