Warning: That cheap mandoline slicer cost me 3 hours and a trip to urgent care

I bought a $14 mandoline from the restaurant supply store last month thinking I was being smart. First time using it to slice potatoes for gratin, my thumb slipped right into the blade. Spent 3 hours in the ER getting 5 stitches and lost a whole day of prep work. The blade wasn't even that sharp, it just had no grip at all on the food holder. My buddy at work swears by the Benriner ones but they are like $50. Has anyone found a decent mid-range mandoline that won't send you to the hospital?

Buy yourself a cut resistant glove too, they're like ten bucks on Amazon. That food holder is always garbage on cheap mandolines so just skip it and use the glove instead.

Used to be one of those guys who thought gloves were overkill for a simple mandoline. Took a chunk off my thumb last summer slicing potatoes for gratin and yeah, I was wrong. @joseph448 is completely right about those holders being useless - I had mine pop off mid slice and that's what got me. For ten bucks, avoiding that trip to urgent care is a no brainer.
