Remembering the week my grandma taught me to season a pan
I was maybe twelve, visiting her farm in Iowa for a whole week. She pulled out this old, rusty skillet from the barn and said, 'We're gonna make this right again.' We scrubbed it with coarse salt, then baked on five thin layers of Crisco, one each day. The whole kitchen smelled like warm oil for a week, but seeing that black, shiny finish appear was pure magic. Does anyone else have a memory of learning this stuff from a family member?

Oh man, that's the real stuff right there. My grandpa did the same thing with me, but with an old griddle he found at a yard sale. We spent a whole Saturday just rubbing it down with oil and putting it in the oven over and over. It felt like a weird science project at the time, watching the metal change. Now I get why he was so serious about it. That pan he taught me on is still my best one.

Ngl that sounds like a huge pain though. Gotta agree with jamies45, spending a whole day on a pan is wild when you can just buy a nonstick one.
