Just realized why my grandma's cornbread never stuck and mine always does
I was digging through my late grandma's kitchen in Akron last weekend and found her old Lodge skillet packed away with a note that said "never wash, just wipe." I've been scrubbing mine with soap and a sponge after every use for 3 years, and that note made me feel like a total idiot. So how often do you guys actually do a full soap wash versus just wiping it down and calling it good?
So your grandma was right and you spent 3 years fighting a skillet for no reason. The note is basically the whole game: soap strips the seasoning, and then everything sticks until you build it back up. I scrub mine with a stiff brush and hot water only, no soap, and maybe twice a year if something really gunky happens I'll use a drop of soap and then re-oil it right away. Your grandma's pan is probably still perfect too, which makes it worse.
