Ripped a seam on a 50-yard roll yesterday and had to patch it
Was doing a bedroom in a new build outside Austin and the backing just split clean open right at the start. Had to seam it back together, but the pattern was a nightmare to match up. Anyone ever had a roll just fail like that mid-install?

I mean I used to think that kind of split was always user error, like maybe I was rolling it too tight or something. But then I had a brand new roll do the exact same thing on a clean subfloor and it changed my mind completely. Honestly sounds like a bad batch from the mill, and that pattern matching nightmare is the worst part.

Oh man, that pattern matching thing is a nightmare. My buddy Dave had the exact same issue last year with some oak flooring he got from a big box store. He swore up and down it was user error until he saw the split line run right through three planks that were still in the packaging. He called the manufacturer and everything but they just said "it's a natural product" and hung up. So yeah, @the_piper, I'm with you on this one. Some batches just come out of the mill bad and there's nothing you can do but eat the cost or return the whole lot.
