Took on a 12 foot white oak bar top in Madison last month and the glue up almost beat me
I had 9 minutes of open time on a Titebond III glue up for a 12 foot white oak bar top and got 7 of the 8 clamps on before it started to set up. I ended up having to cut it apart at the seam, clean off the squeeze out with a chisel, and redo the whole thing two days later with a slower glue. How do you all handle long glue ups when you are working alone, do you pre assemble in sections or just use a slower setting adhesive?
Man that brings back bad memories, been there with a 10 footer and it was not fun. What works for me on long tops is gluing up in two halves first, let those cure overnight, then joint the edges and do one final glue up of just two pieces instead of eight. Way less panic and you can actually get your clamps where you want them. Also Titebond Extend gives you like 15 minutes if you want to stick with a PVA, but honestly the two stage thing is the real fix. Bonus is the halves are way easier to handle solo than wrestling a 12 foot slab by yourself.
