Old finish carpenter's note about my miters still bugs me

Guy named Dale who did high end trim in Austin for 30 years watched me cut crown on a job last spring and just said 'your saw is square but your eyes are not.' Took me a month to figure out he meant I was trusting the digital angle finder instead of checking the joint dry fit. Now I pull out my 7 inch combo square and hold it up to every inside corner before I nail, even if the number reads perfect. Has anyone else had an old timer point out something that simple that totally rewired their process?
