From Solo Acts to Crew Mentality, My View on New Hires Flipped

I used to think bringing fresh apprentices onto a job site just meant more babysitting and less work done. My focus was always on finishing my own tasks fast without any interruptions. Then on a recent framing project for a garage addition, I was setting rafters and miscounted the spacing. A new guy, barely out of trade school, quietly mentioned the error before I nailed everything in place. That simple catch saved us hours of rework and a lot of material waste. It hit me that their new eyes see things my tired ones gloss over. Now I make a point to explain why we do things a certain way, and the whole team runs smoother. Honestly, it's made my own work better too.

It's wild how much you start to see your own routine when you have to explain it to someone new. That act of talking through the steps makes you check yourself before you wreck yourself, like they say. Those green guys might not have the speed yet, but they sure have the focus to spot details we take for granted. Getting them asking why we do things actually tightens up the whole crew's work.

One trainee's 'why' made us rethink all our checklists, right?

But how often does that actually happen though?
