My uncle told me to always ask for a higher salary, and it backfired in the funniest way

Honestly, my uncle Bob, who works in car sales, gave me this big speech about never taking the first offer. So when I got a job offer in Austin for a junior marketing role, I followed his advice and asked for 20% more. The hiring manager just went silent for a minute, then said, 'Okay, we can do that. We'll just move the role from a junior to a senior level with all the extra duties.' I was so shocked I just said yes. Ngl, my first three months were a total mess trying to handle projects I had zero clue about, like managing a $15,000 ad budget. Has anyone else gotten advice that sounded smart but blew up in their face like this?

My friend's dad told him to always negotiate his rent, so he tried it in Dallas and his landlord just said "sure, the market rate went up 10% this month." Totally backfired. I see this all the time where generic advice misses the details, like @lisar14 said, it's a brutal way to learn.

Oof, that's rough. I feel for you, that's a brutal way to learn.

Brutal? Seems a bit dramatic.
