Messing up my garage cleanup showed me why I fail at project estimates

I tried to sort my garage in one day and got swamped by stuff. This made me see that at work, I jump into tasks without thinking ahead. Do you have tricks to plan better for both home and job projects?

Your garage cleanup story made me think. I used to jump into things without planning, but after a few disasters, I learned to start by listing all the steps first. It saves so much time.

Actually, @henderson.brooke, I get where you're coming from, but I've found that listing every step can sometimes slow me down too much. When I over-plan, I spend more time writing lists than actually doing the work. For me, jumping in and figuring it out as I go keeps things moving. Sure, there might be a mess along the way, but I learn faster by doing. Sometimes a rough start leads to a better end result because I adapt on the fly. What do you do when your plan hits a surprise snag?

Totally get that! My last closet reorganization was a mess because I just started pulling everything out. Ended up with a bigger pile on the bed and no plan to put it back. Now I write down zones, like "shoes first, then winter clothes," before touching anything.
