I finally stopped chasing certifications, started chasing referrals

I spent 2 years and about $3,000 on IT certs, thinking that's what would get me hired in Austin. Then a hiring manager told me flat out, 'Your resume looks like everyone else's, but your buddy Sam's word got you in the room.' That one comment flipped my whole view. I started asking old coworkers for introductions instead of paying for more exams. Has anyone else found that networking beats credentials when you're mid-career?

And that hiring manager basically handed you the cheat code, right? The certs get you past the robot filter, but the referral gets you past the human gatekeeper. I've seen it happen three times where a solid mid-level guy with zero new certs landed a role just because a former teammate vouched for them in a group chat. The kicker is, once you're in, nobody ever asks to see your cert list again. They just care if you can fix the thing on the whiteboard by Friday. So yeah, that $3,000 was basically tuition for learning that people buy from people they already trust, not from the fanciest PDF.
