Am I the only one who didn't know the average worker changes jobs 12 times?
I was poking around the Bureau of Labor Statistics site last week looking for something totally unrelated, and I landed on a page that said the average person holds around 12 jobs between ages 18 and 54. Twelve. I sat there doing the math on my own resume and I'm at 9, and I'm only 41. Back when I started working in the late 90s at a Kroger in Garland, Texas, everybody acted like job hopping was a red flag that would follow you forever. My old manager there, a guy named Dale, used to say nobody would hire you if you couldn't stick somewhere 5 years. Now I look around and half the people I know have a new title every 2 or 3 years, and nobody blinks. I think the part that got me was that the stat has been fairly steady, meaning this was always kind of normal and we were just taught to feel bad about it. So did you run the math on your own job count, and does the number surprise you or not?
