My 2014 Outlander's owners manual says to torque lug nuts to 80 ft lbs, but every guy I ride with swears by 100
Pulled the manual out of the storage box under the seat after a buddy in Sudbury kept giving me grief about my wheels feeling loose on the trail. Turns out 80 ft lbs is what Can-Am actually calls for, and over torquing just stretches the studs and warps the rotors on these machines. Anyone else actually follow the book numbers or do you just crank them until your arm says stop?
Turns out 80 ft lbs is what Can-Am actually calls for, and that right there is the whole problem with trail wisdom. Every guy with a breaker bar and a strong arm thinks he knows better than the engineers who built the thing. I watched a buddy in Sudbury crank his lugs so tight the stud snapped clean off in the middle of nowhere, then spent two hours swearing at a machine that did nothing wrong. Your manual is not a suggestion, it is the number. Follow it and stop listening to guys whose only tool is their feelings.
