My stove quit on me in the middle of nowhere Alaska
I was on a solo trip deep in Alaska last summer when my portable stove suddenly died. Trying to heat food in freezing temps without it was a nightmare. Now I think relying on budget cooking gear is just asking for trouble. That failure changed how I prep for remote camps. Always test your essentials before heading out.

Man, do you ever test your gear right before a trip and think it's fine? I had a water filter give up on me last spring, like completely clogged, on a weekend hike (so much for "just cleaned it"). Spent a whole day boiling creek water with my one tiny pot, which was miserable. That kind of fail really makes you double-check everything now, even the stuff you trust. I totally get why one bad piece of gear changes your whole system.

Read a blog post calling water filters the most common point of failure in the backcountry.

Ugh, water filters are the worst for that! Mine totally failed on a river trip last year, and I had to use iodine tablets which taste awful. It makes you so paranoid about checking everything twice now.
