My buddy swore by his $300 camp stove review until it died boiling water in Yosemite
My friend Dan brought his fancy $300 stove to Yosemite last month, telling everyone at the site it was the best thing since sliced bread based on some glowing review he'd read online. On night two it sputtered out halfway through boiling water for our ramen, and he had to finish the job on my $25 pocket rocket while we all watched. Has anyone else bought gear off a five star review only to have it fall apart the first trip out?
I get why you're blaming the reviews but honestly a stove dying on night two says more about how Dan treats his gear than the stove itself. People read "boils water in 3 minutes" and think that means it runs forever with zero upkeep, then they never clean the jet, never check the o-rings, and leave it rattling around loose in a tote bag all year. Half the one star reviews on gear sites are guys who did exactly that, and half the five star ones are from the first weekend when everything still works. Your pocket rocket worked because it's dead simple, not because it's magic, and Dan's stove probably would've too if he'd done basic stuff like keeping the fuel line clean and not letting it sit with old gas in it. So yeah, reviews are worth what you pay for them, but the gear dying says as much about the owner as the gear.
