Guy at the REI in Boise said my $300 sleeping bag was overkill for car camping, now I can't decide if he was right
So I was in the Boise REI about three weeks ago returning a rain jacket, and I got to talking with this older guy at the gear counter about sleeping bags. I mentioned I'd just picked up a 15 degree down bag for $300 for our family car camping trips up near McCall, and he kind of laughed and said I was paying for weight I'd never carry. He said for car camping he's used the same $60 synthetic rectangle bag for 12 years and just brings an extra blanket. That got in my head. On one hand, he's right that I'm not hiking anywhere with it, and my kids don't care what bag I'm in. On the other hand, it got down to 28 degrees one night at Payette Lake in June, and I was the only one who slept through it while my wife shivered in her old bag. So now I'm stuck. Do I admit he had a point and start buying cheap gear for car trips, or do I keep buying the good stuff because a bad night's sleep ruins the whole trip? Where do you all draw the line between car camping and backpacking gear?
