Why is everyone re-greasing helicals like they're regular gears?

Been in a repair shop in Portland for 8 years now and I keep seeing guys slather lithium grease on helical focus rings like it's a normal spur gear setup. That thick stuff binds the helix and makes the focus feel gritty after a month, plus it traps dust and turns into paste. I switched to a light silicone grease on the mating surfaces only, about a pea sized dab, and the smoothness difference is night and day. Am I wrong here or have you guys seen the same jamming issue with thick grease on helicoids?
