Spotted a guy fixing a Nikon F2 with a butter knife at a garage sale

I was at a random estate sale over in Elmhurst last month and saw this older fella carefully prying open a jammed shutter curtain on a beat-up Nikon F2 using a regular butter knife. He said he'd been fixing cameras that way since the 70s because he never owned proper tools. Anyone else ever seen some seriously backyard repair methods that somehow worked fine?

Picked up a beat up Pentax Spotmatic at a thrift store once and fixed the light seals with a cut up rubber band and a dab of super glue. Still works fine actually. Honestly people get way too precious about this stuff. If the camera works after using whatever junk you had on hand thats all that matters. Butter knife is basically just a flathead screwdriver that you can also eat with so whats the issue really.

Fixed a stubborn shutter release on a Minolta with a paperclip once.
