Just realized my ultrasonic cleaner was eating brass parts for 2 years

I always thought my $180 Crest unit was gentle enough for small brass levers, but after rebuilding a jammed shutter from a Rolleicord last week I found pitting inside the holes. Turns out the cheap degreaser I bought at a local hardware store in Akron was way too aggressive for anything with clockwork tolerances. Has anyone else had a cleaning solution quietly destroy parts and how did you catch it before it ruined a customer's gear?
