The $12 sanding block I made from scrap plywood beats every store bought one I've used

After burning through 4 cheap rubber blocks in a single kitchen cabinet job last spring, I glued two 3/4" ply offcuts together with a leather strip on the bottom and the grip is so solid I haven't touched a factory block since, anyone else found a weird homemade tool that just works better?

Man, I love this. I did almost the same thing last year with a chunk of oak and an old belt sander strip. The leather idea is smart, I just rough sanded the bottom and it grips fine, but the weight difference is what gets me. Store blocks feel like toys now, light and flimsy and they flex on the edges. Homemade ones just feel planted, like the tool is actually part of your hand. Plus when it wears out you just glue another strip on, no trip to the store.
