That crown molding mitre took me ALL Saturday, what's your trick?

I was doing a kitchen job in Columbus and the crown molding had this weird spring angle, nothing matched the standard 38 degrees. I must have recut the same piece six times trying to nail it, each attempt looked fine on the saw but sat wrong on the wall. Finally I grabbed some scrap and built a little jig to hold it at the exact ceiling pitch, done in twenty minutes after that. Anyone else run into crown angles that make no sense, or do you just default to coping every inside corner no matter what?

Did you try flipping the saw to the other side and using a bevel gauge from the actual wall? I spent a whole afternoon on a bathroom once where the walls were slightly out of plumb, and my miters kept gaping at the top until I realized the ceiling itself had a dip in the middle. That little jig trick sounds like a lifesaver, honestly, I usually just end up shimming the crown and hoping the caulk hides the rest.
