A guy at my LFS said my 2 gallon bowl was a death trap, and now I can't stop thinking about it
I was in my local fish store in Bellingham last Saturday picking up some root tabs when I overheard the owner talking to a teenager about a 2 gallon bowl she wanted for a betta. He didn't yell at her or anything, he just said "you can keep a betta alive in there, but you can't keep one happy, and there's a big gap between those two things." That line got stuck in my head the whole drive home. I've had a 2.5 gallon planted bowl on my kitchen counter for about 8 months with a single betta and some java moss, and I always figured it was fine because he eats and his color looks good. But now I keep wondering if "fine" is just me not knowing what happy would even look like. I pulled out my test kit that night and my nitrates were sitting at 40 ppm, which is way higher than I thought for a tiny bowl with one fish. So now I'm looking at actual 5 gallon tanks and feeling kind of dumb about the last 8 months. Has anyone here moved a betta from a bowl like mine into something bigger, and did you actually see a difference in the fish, or is it more of a peace of mind thing? Any small footprint tank setups you'd recommend for a counter that only has about 10 inches of depth to work with?
