Spent $80 on a programmable thermostat and it paid for itself in 2 months
I finally swapped out my old manual thermostat for a cheap programmable one from Home Depot. Set it to drop the temp 8 degrees while I'm at work and at night. My gas bill went from $145 to $95 last month. Has anyone else seen big savings from small changes like that?

Idk if it's exactly 8 degrees that saved you all that, but that's still a solid drop. $50 less on a gas bill in just a month is pretty wild. Maybe it's just me but I think the bigger savings come from keeping the temp lower for longer stretches, not just the number itself. I've seen people say dropping it while you're asleep or away helps more than a big swing during the day. Still, $80 for a thermostat that pays itself off in two months is a steal either way.

You really hit on something there, @the_simon. The consistency part is huge in my experience, even a small drop over a whole evening adds up way more than a big swing for a few hours. I'm glad it worked out for you too, and that price point is hard to argue with when you see the actual savings hit your bank account.
