Unpopular opinion: Hostel loyalty programs are actually worth it if you do the math

I used to always just book the cheapest bunk on Hostelworld without thinking twice. But last year on a 3 week trip through Portugal I noticed I was spending like $12 a night at the same chain in Porto and Lisbon. Turned out signing up for their free membership gave me a free night after 10 stays and I was already at 8. The clerk tipped me off when I checked in and I saved like $30 on my last night which bought me a nice dinner. Has anyone else actually gotten anything good from hostel reward programs or is it just a gimmick?

Idk, Hostelworld doesn't have its own loyalty program though.

That $30 dinner must have been fire at least lol. @karent75 is right though, there's no real Hostelworld rewards so you kinda have to stick with a specific chain for it to pay off. Honestly, if you're bouncing between different hostels every night just to chase a free one, you're probably overthinking a $12 bed.
