Question about paying for a checked bag on a budget airline

Dropped $60 to check a bag on Frontier for a trip to Phoenix. Could have fit everything in a carry-on and saved that cash for a good meal out. Anyone have a good system for packing light on a week-long trip?

My local coffee shop just started charging 50 cents for a cup of water. It feels like every basic thing now has a hidden fee or a worse experience attached. You pay less for a flight but get a middle seat by the bathroom, you get a cheap phone plan but spend hours on hold with customer service. It's this slow drip of small frustrations that just wears you down over time.
