I swore hostels were dirty party houses until a $14 night in Savannah changed my whole trip budget
For a long time I would not step foot in a hostel. I pictured loud bunk rooms, stuff getting stolen, and sharing a bathroom with 12 strangers, so I always paid $110 or more a night for a cheap motel. Then a buddy talked me into a weekend in Savannah in March and every hotel near downtown wanted $180 a night. He booked us two beds in a place off Broughton Street for $14 each. The room was clean, the front desk guy gave us a map with free parking spots marked on it, and I met a girl from Berlin who told me about a $5 lunch counter I never would have found. Over 3 nights I put $500 back in my pocket, and that cash paid for a kayak tour and a real dinner. I still want my own bathroom sometimes, but I was flat out wrong about the whole scene. What is the cheapest night you have paid somewhere, and would you do it again?
Ha, nobody ever brings up the real reason hostels beat hotels: you're paying for other people's local knowledge, not just a bed. My cheapest was 12 bucks in Lisbon and the guy in my dorm saved me 200 euros on a rental car scam, so yeah I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
