A hostel worker in Lisbon asked why I pay for airport buses, and it saved me $60
Three years ago I was in Lisbon and about to buy a 15 euro round trip airport bus ticket when the guy at my hostel front desk stopped me. He said the city bus does the same route for 2 euros if you just walk 4 minutes to the stop. I tried it and it worked fine, took about 10 minutes longer. Since then I always check the local bus or metro option before booking any airport shuttle. On my trip to Porto after that I paid 2.50 instead of 20. What's your go to move for getting from an airport to the city center without getting ripped off?
Ever tried just walking out of the airport and grabbing whatever bus the locals use? That's my move every time now. I look up the city bus number before I even land, screenshot the route on my phone so I don't need wifi, and just follow the crowd of workers heading out. The signs in the terminal always push you toward the fancy shuttle but if you walk past baggage claim there's usually a regular stop like 5 minutes away. Worst case you waste 20 minutes figuring it out, best case you save enough for a real dinner instead of a sad airport sandwich lol.
