A hostel owner in Lisbon showed me his secret for free city tours

I was staying at a small hostel in Lisbon last fall, trying to stretch my budget. The owner, an older man named Eduardo, saw me looking at a pricey walking tour ad and shook his head. He pulled out a city map and said, 'Forget that. The number 28 tram is 3 euros for a day pass. Ride it end to end. You see all the hills, the old town, everything. Then, get off anywhere that looks good and walk.' I did exactly that the next day. The tram route was basically a perfect loop of all the major sights, and hopping on and off let me explore at my own pace for almost nothing. It felt like a real local tip, not some tourist trap. Has anyone else found a specific public transit line in a city that doubled as a great sightseeing tour?

The Circle Line ferry tip is solid. Did that last summer and it was way better than any tour boat.

Oh man, that's such a good tip! I did the exact same thing with the Circle Line ferry in NYC. For like three bucks you get the best views of the Statue of Liberty and the whole skyline.
