TIL my mom's 'cheap' chicken dinner was costing me way more than I thought
So I've been making this chicken and rice thing for like two years now, thinking I was being so smart and frugal because chicken thighs are cheap and rice is cheap. Then last Tuesday I sat down and actually added up what I spend on it in a month, and it came out to about $180 just for dinners, which felt insane. Turns out I was buying the fancy bone-in thighs at $3.49 a pound when the store brand boneless ones go on sale for $1.99, and I was tossing like a third of every package because I never used the bones for anything. The thing that tipped me off was my sister visiting and asking why I buy the expensive kind, and I honestly didn't have an answer. I just assumed bone-in was always cheaper per pound but I never did the math on how much I was throwing out. Anybody else catch themselves buying the wrong cut for years before someone pointed it out? What finally made it click for you?
