The cashier at Aldi in Dayton told me to stop buying pre-shredded cheese and I'm still mad she was right
I was checking out about 3 weeks ago with two bags of the shredded stuff and she pointed at the block cheese right behind me and said 'that's $1.79, yours is $3.49 and it's mostly wood pulp.' I laughed it off but then I did the math on my receipt later and I was burning like $22 a month on shreds for tacos and eggs. Bought a $4 grater at Goodwill, now a block lasts me almost two weeks and melts way better on a quesadilla. I hate that a stranger at the register fixed my grocery budget in one sentence. Has anyone else had a store employee casually save them money like that?
I once spent a solid 15 minutes in the dairy aisle comparing unit prices on string cheese like I was doing my taxes, and my wife just grabbed the big bag and walked off. The block versus shred thing got me too, though mine was the "fancy" cheddar at $5.99 that I told myself tasted better until I tried the store brand and could not tell the difference. Store workers see the same dumb habits on repeat all day, so when one bothers to speak up, it usually means we really are messing up.
