My neighbor's 20 year old hibiscus cutting made me question my whole plant setup

Been growing stuff on my fire escape for 2 years now, mostly herbs and a sad pepper plant. Last month my neighbor Martha handed me a cutting from her hibiscus that she said has been alive since 2004. She grows it in a cracked plastic pot with dirt she dug up from the park. Meanwhile I spent $60 on fancy soil and pots from the garden center and my stuff barely survives. She never fertilizes, waters it when she remembers, and it blooms like crazy. Made me realize I was overthinking everything. Maybe the hobby is about the plant, not the gear. Has anyone else had a humbling moment like this where someone with zero budget outdid your whole setup?

That "dirt she dug up from the park" part got me, cause my herbs are in $30 organic mix and still look sad. Honestly the plants just wanna grow, we're the ones making it complicated with all the fancy stuff.
