Just figured out why my old fishing rods kept cracking

I've been storing my graphite rods leaned against a garage wall for maybe 8 years, and last spring two of them snapped right at the ferrule for no reason. A guy at the pawn shop in Boise told me they need to hang vertically from the tip or lie flat, and the weight of the reel was putting constant pressure on the joints whole time. Anyone else wreck gear from bad storage habits and what do you do different now?

Man, that sucks. I read somewhere that graphite rods are way more sensitive to that constant pressure than the older fiberglass ones, so leaning them can basically weaken the resin over time. I hang mine from a hook in the ceiling now, takes two seconds and I haven't had a crack since.
