Free museum days vs cheap community classes, which actually helps you stick with a hobby?

I tried both last month in Portland, the free museum pass got me out once but the $10 community pottery class has me going every Tuesday. The class gives me other people to learn from and a set time, while the museum is just me wandering alone. Does paying a little money make you more committed, or have you found a totally free setup that keeps you hooked?
