My old foreman in Detroit told me to always use a 3/8 inch joint for brick veneer.

He said it was stronger and looked better. I argued for a half inch for years, thought it was faster. Saw a wall I did back then last week, half inch joints are all cracked. Anyone else stick to a specific joint size for veneer work?

Man, your old foreman was spot on. That 3/8 inch joint gives the mortar just the right amount of meat to hold without shrinking and cracking like the bigger ones do. I've seen the same thing on repairs, where the half inch jobs always seem to fail first. What mix were you using back then, just a standard type N?

Guess he was right all along. You ever try a 5/8 joint? Seen that crack even faster.

Yeah, that 5/8 is basically a guaranteed crack waiting to happen. Makes you wonder why they even spec it sometimes.
