Just realized half the guys on my crew in Phoenix are still using a 3/8 inch joint for everything, even on exterior walls. I say you need a full 1/2 inch for proper drainage and frost resistance. What's your standard?

Cheap insurance is right.

Heard a story from a buddy up north about this exact thing. His whole crew had to redo a bunch of exterior work after a bad freeze because they skimped on the joint size. Water got in, expanded, and just wrecked the seal. Now he won't touch anything outside without that full half inch. Makes sense to me, especially with the temperature swings we can get. Seems like a cheap insurance policy to just use the right size from the start.
