The guy at the Canyon Park QFC told me to stop fighting the hill by my house and I finally listened
So I live up near the top of a hill off 228th and for 3 years I kept trying to run it the same way, charging straight up, dying halfway, wheezing on somebody's lawn. A guy I see almost every morning at the QFC on Canyon Park, older dude, runs the same loop, told me back in the spring to just walk the steep part and save my legs for the flats. I nodded and ignored him because who wants to walk during a run, right? Fast forward to 5 weeks ago, I finally tried it, and I knocked almost 2 minutes off my usual 3 mile loop. Turns out I was blowing up my heart rate in the first half mile and never recovering. Now I walk that steep stretch every time and I actually look forward to the run instead of dreading it. Anybody else here changed up their route around Bothell and had it backfire, or is walking part of your run just a normal thing people do?
Buddy of mine did the opposite and it bit him. He runs the Burke-Gilman trail and got it in his head that he had to jog the whole thing without stopping, so he started adding this big climb up to his place in Kenmore at the end. Two weeks in his knee was wrecked and he was limping around the office. His wife finally told him to knock it off and just walk the last block home. He did and the knee cleared up in like ten days. Some people need a stranger at QFC to set them straight, some need their wife.
