Watching my basil plants thrive after switching to companion planting felt like a mini revelation
I've always grown basil in pots on my balcony, but last season they kept getting attacked by pests, I mean, it was frustrating to see the leaves full of holes. Idk, maybe it's just me, but I was about to give up until I read about planting marigolds nearby as a natural deterrent. So, I picked up some French marigold seeds and interspersed them with my basil, and the difference was almost immediate. Not only did the pest issue drop off, but the basil seemed to grow fuller and more aromatic, which I didn't expect at all. This little experiment taught me that sometimes the best solutions involve working with nature's own systems rather than fighting against them. Now I'm curious about other plant partnerships, like tomatoes with basil or carrots with onions. Has anyone else dabbled in companion planting and noticed unexpected benefits? I'm really keen to hear what combinations have worked for you all.

Companion planting always sounds so mystical, like garden alchemy... but isn't it just correlation over causation? Pests fluctuate naturally, and basil growth varies with weather and care. I tried marigolds once and still had aphids, so my experience was pretty underwhelming. It feels like we're attributing magic to basic plant biology that we don't fully understand. Sure, some combinations might help, but calling it a revelation seems a bit dramatic for what could be random chance. I'm not convinced it's anything more than gardening folklore with occasional lucky coincidences.

Exactly, I've had the same mixed results with marigolds not doing a thing for my aphid problem. It's easy to get excited about a good season and credit the companion planting, when it was probably just better soil that year. I stick to what I can actually control now, like consistent watering and checking for bugs early. The whole concept feels like guessing unless you're running a proper controlled test.

What kind of setup did you have the marigolds in? Mine were right in the bed with my tomatoes and did nothing special either. I had better luck just blasting the aphids off with water early in the morning.
