I finally got into a debate over lawn replacements in my suburb

Around here, more folks are swapping grass for gravel or fake turf to save time and water. One side says it's smart because it cuts down on maintenance and helps during droughts. The other side argues that real plants, even drought-tolerant ones, are better for soil health and cooling the air. I saw a neighbor pull out all their grass for rocks, and now their yard feels hot and dead in summer. But some friends say their gravel yards never need mowing, so they have more time for other plants. Where do you stand on replacing lawns with non-living stuff?

Try explaining to bees why you replaced their buffet with a rock collection lol.

Okay but can we talk about how my attempt at a "low maintenance" yard just became a dusty patch that kills flip flops? @henderson.brooke I get the no-mow dream, but my gravel spot just bakes and looks sad. Maybe a mix is key, like some tough plants with a little gravel, so it's not a total dead zone for everything with wings. My yard is proof that going full rock garden might save water but also kills the vibe.

Why keep grass if it just dies in summer?
