Chose a south facing balcony over a greenhouse, no regrets after July heatwave

I had the option to rent a place with a tiny greenhouse shared in the courtyard or a cramped apartment with a south facing balcony. The greenhouse seemed like the obvious pick, but I went with the balcony since it was mine alone. During that 5 day stretch of 100 degree weather, the greenhouse hit 110 inside and my tomatoes still set fruit on the balcony. The roses got a bit crispy but the peppers loved it. My neighbor in the greenhouse lost half his seedlings. Am I just lucky or does direct sun beat shelter for most annuals? Anyone else pick light over protection and end up better off?
