Botanic garden or wild woods, which one really teaches you more?

Hit the arboretum in Portland last weekend and then hiked a patch of oak savanna the same day. The garden had labels on everything but the wild spot had plants fighting for space, real conditions. Does a curated collection actually prep you for field ID, or is it all just pretty names? Curious who else thinks hands-on dirt beats a polished path.

Ever notice how the labels vanish once you're actually lost in a stand of cottonwoods? My buddy spent a summer studying tree bark at a botanical garden, then got turned around on a river trail and couldn't tell a maple from a walnut without a plaque. The wild patch taught him more in one hour of squinting at leaves than six months of neat little signs did.
