My old shop teacher in Detroit said to sew the signatures with plain linen thread, not the waxed stuff from the craft store

I ignored him for two books because the craft store stuff was cheaper, and both fell apart at the hinges within a year, so now I'm redoing them at my kitchen table. Is there a bulk linen thread you folks trust, or should I just raid the hardware store?
