My old boss made us sew every section by hand, now I use a $12 awl and it's honestly faster

Back in 2011 at the shop in Portland we spent two hours per book on stitching, but now I punch holes with an awl and finish in 30 minutes. Has anyone else switched methods and felt weirdly guilty about it?
