Finally got my first Coptic stitch to sit flat after 4 crooked tries

Last Saturday at my kitchen table in Boise I switched from waxed linen to 18/3 hemp thread and the signatures finally lined up square. Anyone got a trick for keeping the kettle stitch snug without pulling the holes open?
