Borrowed a caliper from the garage, now I can't bind without it.

Precision tools ruin you for guesswork. After using a caliper to set brake pads, eyeballing it just leads to constant rubbing. I had to redo my front brakes three times before I gave up and borrowed one. Now I check clearances with a caliper every time. Life is too short for squeaky brakes.

My old mechanic always used a caliper for brake clearances. He said it saved him from comebacks and unhappy customers. @andrew_garcia1 is right, once you go precise, you can't go back.

Read a mechanic's blog that agreed with @andrew_garcia1. Once you use a caliper, eyeballing it seems pointless. Brake jobs go faster with the right tools.
