The book club pick that split us down the middle, and the guy who walked out

We voted on a sci-fi novel about memory implants last Tuesday at the Maplewood library, and one retired engineer stood up mid-discussion to call it 'escapist garbage' before grabbing his coat. He said the characters had no stake in the real world, but the rest of us loved the ethical questions about identity. Has anyone else had a member storm off like that, and did your group ever reconcile the split?

Figured I'd chime in since I read a piece about memory tech in a science journal last month. It said these implants are already being tested on mice, and the big worry isn't whether they work, but who gets to delete bad memories. That's the same fork in the road your group hit, I bet. The engineer wanted stakes you can touch, like jobs or bills, while the rest of you were diving into what makes a person a person. Both sides are sort of right, but walking out just shuts down the talk. Maybe next time someone can bring up a real life example, like a veteran with PTSD, to bridge that gap. Worked for my old group, though your mileage may vary.
