Our club split right down the middle over whether the author meant for us to hate the main character
Last Tuesday at our meeting in the back room of Rosie's Diner here in Boise, we spent almost the whole hour and a half on one single question about the book we just finished, and nobody would budge. Half the group says the author wrote the main guy to be disliked on purpose, like a warning about what happens when you only look out for yourself, and the other half says we are supposed to feel sorry for him the whole way through and that the book falls apart if you read it the other way. I was in the first camp until Karen read one line out loud from chapter 9 and honestly it made me doubt myself for a second. Then Marcus pointed out that the guy never once apologizes to his brother, not even at the end, which feels like the author is telling us something. We ended up voting 6 to 5 and three people abstained, which is the closest split we have had since we started this club back in January. So how do you all handle it when a book seems built to be read two ways, do you go with what the author probably meant or with how the story actually made you feel?
