My book club finally finished a thick novel in under three weeks for the first time

We usually get bogged down around chapter 5 with anything over 400 pages, but someone suggested we swap to a buddy read system where two of us tackle each section. Has anyone else found a system that keeps everyone from falling off the wagon?

Honestly, maybe the buddy system just accidentally makes people better at debating if sections clash.

Disagree with the whole thing honestly. Buddy reading just makes people rush through their assigned pages without actually absorbing anything, so the discussion turns into a bunch of surface level hot takes. You're basically outsourcing the reading to two people per section while everyone else skims or skips entirely. The real problem is that nobody actually wanted to read a 400 page book in the first place, so forcing it with a buddy system is just bandaiding a bigger issue. Pick shorter books that people actually enjoy and the momentum takes care of itself. No system fixes a book club that picked the wrong book.
