I voted against reading Klara and the Sun for 3 weeks, then one comment flipped me
I was the loudest no on Klara and the Sun at our meetup 3 weeks ago, mostly because I was burnt out on robot books after our last pick. Then Dana, who almost never talks during voting, said something quiet about how the real debate in that book is whether love means anything if it can be copied, and everyone went silent for like 10 seconds. I went home and read the first 40 pages that night and ended up finishing it in 3 days. Now I think I was judging the pitch instead of the book, which is a bad habit I have. How do you all handle it when you hate a book's premise but someone you trust swears the actual story is different?
Man, the thing nobody talks about is how the pitch itself gets ruined by whoever is pushing the book. If a big reader in the group raves about something, I dock it points before I even crack it open (weird reverse snob thing, I know). But when the quiet person speaks up, it hits different because they had to actually work up to saying it. My fix is to ask the shy recommender one question: "what part would I hate?" Cause Dana's answer about copied love is basically a warning label in disguise, and that told you more than any rave review could.
